Books I Recommend

I recommend any book by Dr. William Glasser, but these are two of my favorites:
  • Getting Together and Staying Together: Solving the Mystery of Marriage, 2000
  • For Parents and Teenagers: Dissolving the Barrier Between You and Your Teen, 2002

Other books about relationships:

  • Gottman, John, PhD.  Why Marriages Succeed or Fail: What You Can Learn from the Breakthrough Research to Make Your Marriage Last.  New York: Simon & Schuster, 1994.
  • My personal favorite by John Gottman is The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work
  • Hendrix, Harville.  Getting the Love You Want. A Guide for Couples.  New York: Harper & Row, 1990.
  • Allen, Patricia.  Getting to "I Do"  (I absolutely love this book!  It was out of print for a while, but I stll kept recommending it to my women clients.  Now I see it on the bookshelves again.  Hurray!)

A new book I've been recommending for women who are stressed out from trying to do everything and feeling unappreciated in their marriages:

  • The Surrendered Wife by Laura Doyle.  Don't let the title fool you.  This is a powerful book about how to recreate intimacy in your marriage by taking care of yourself and letting go of trying to fix your husband.  In the book Laura Doyle states she is a feminist.  This book is NOT about being a doormat.

  • The Secrets of Happily Married Men by Scott Haltzman, MD.  Got to give husbands something to read that speaks to them and this book looks like just the thing.  It's not your average, though misguided, attempt to get men to "get in touch with their feelings," so dive right in, men!

Books by Barbara de Angelis:

  • My favorite is: Are You the One for Me?: Knowing Who’s Right & Avoiding Who’s Wrong, New York: Dell Publishing, 1992

Books by Michele Weiner-Davis, MSW:

  • My favorite is: Divorce Busting: A Revolutionary and Rapid Program for Staying Together.  New York:Summit Books, 1992

  • Covey, Sean. The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens.  New York: Franklin Covey Co., 1998.  (This is a great books for adults too!)
  • Lieberman, David, PhD.  Make Peace with Anyone: Breakthrough Strategies to Quickly End Any Conflict, Feud, or Estrangement. New York:St. Martin’s Press.

  • Stockman, Larry V. &Graves, Cynthia S.  Adult Children Who Won’t Grow Up: How to Finally Cut the Cord that Binds You.  California: Prima Publishing and Communications, 1990.

Books about Abuse:

  • Gil, Eliana.  Outgrowing the Pain: A Book for and about Adults Abused as Children. San Francisco: Launch Press, 1983
  • Davis, Laura.  Allies in Healing
  • Zambrano, Myrna M. Mejor Sola Que Mal Acompañada:Para la Mujer Golpeada/For the Latina in an Abusive Relationship.  Seattle: Seal Press, 1985.
  • NiCarty, Ginny.  Getting Free: A Handbook for Women in Abusive Relationships.  Seattle: Seal Press, 1986

Books my clients have recommended that they have found helpful:

  • The Five Love Languages by Gary Chapman
  • Stop Walking on Eggshells by Paul Mason
